Which 3D printers have tool changers?

Nine complete toolchanger printers were on sale in the US on October 14, 2026. Six swap whole toolheads: the Flashforge Creator 5 and Creator 5 Pro, Snapmaker U1, WonderMaker ZR Ultra-S, Makertech ProForge 5 and Prusa XL+. Three swap only hotends or nozzles: the Bambu Lab H2C and Prusa’s CORE One+ and CORE One L+ with INDX.

Prices are each maker’s US store listing, with three exceptions: the ZR Ultra-S (SainSmart, WonderMaker’s US retailer), the two INDX printers (Swing Design, a US Prusa reseller, which quoted early November shipping for the CORE One L+ INDX) and the XL+ (listed by Prusa on October 14, 2026, on its US business page, which names the configurations “1-Toolhead XL” and so on). Makertech prices in pounds and its store converts to dollars, so its US figure moves with the exchange rate.

What “tool” means differs by machine:

  • Whole toolhead. The Creator 5 series, U1, ZR Ultra-S, ProForge 5 and XL+ park complete printheads. On the XL+, Prusa says each one has “its own extruder, hotend, nozzle, and filament.” Snapmaker quotes 5-second swaps on the U1, which keeps all four toolheads preheated.
  • Hotend. The H2C keeps one fixed left hotend. Its Vortek system swaps the right side among up to six induction-heated hotends, per Bambu Lab’s H2C FAQ.
  • Passive tool. Bondtech’s INDX on the Prusa CORE One picks up tools with no electronics in them. Each tool carries its own nozzle and filament path. An induction coil in the moving head heats whichever tool it holds, and Prusa quotes about 12 seconds per change. The Bondtech INDX page covers the system.

The Snapmaker U1 and Prusa XL toolchanger pages cover those two machines in depth.

What is the cheapest toolchanger 3D printer?

The Flashforge Creator 5 is the cheapest complete toolchanger printer: Flashforge’s US store listed it at $699, down from $799, on October 14, 2026. It has four toolheads, a 256 mm cube of build volume and an open frame. Next is the Snapmaker U1 at $749. The cheapest with a heated chamber is the Creator 5 Pro at $849.

Two cheaper-looking routes come with conditions:

  • Pre-orders. Creality opened K3 pre-orders at $849 on October 13, 2026, but the K3 was not shipping yet (see the last section).
  • Converting a printer you own. The open-source designs below cost parts and build time on a machine you already have. For Klipper machines such as the Voron 2.4, Trident, RatRig V-Core and Sovol SV08, Bondtech’s store lists the INDX Smart Toolhead at $390 and passive tools at $45 each.

Why are toolchanger printers so expensive?

A toolchanger that parks whole toolheads needs a complete extruder, hotend, fans and wiring for every tool, plus docks to hold them. Prusa’s own prices show it: the assembled XL is $2,690 with one toolhead and $4,190 with five. That is $1,500 for four more toolheads, where a single-toolhead printer carries one of each.

Where the money goes, with the makers’ numbers:

  • A full printhead per tool. Each XL+ toolhead carries its own extruder, hotend and nozzle. US reseller Printed Solid lists Prusa’s XL Single-Tool to Five-Head upgrade at $2,099.
  • Each extra head adds a fixed cost. On Makertech’s ProForge 5, every added print head raises the semi-assembled price by about $202 in the US ($2,367 with one head, $3,174 with five). Makertech sells a spare print head at £149.
  • Docks, couplers and electronics. A DIY StealthChanger build adds a dock for each tool, a shuttle and backplates, toolhead boards, a distribution board and an umbilical cable to every tool, per the StealthChanger documentation.

Hotend and nozzle changers cut the per-tool cost by keeping one active head. Bondtech’s store prices an INDX tool at $45 against $390 for the Smart Toolhead that moves it. At Swing Design, INDX adds $700 to the CORE One+ ($1,299 without it, $1,999 with four tools). Going from four to eight tools adds $250.

Not every toolchanger costs that much. Four-toolhead machines with smaller frames sell for under $1,000: the Creator 5 at $699, the U1 at $749 and the ZR Ultra-S at $999, each below its list price on October 14, 2026.

Which toolchanger printers have a heated chamber?

Four toolchanger printers have active chamber heating: the Bambu Lab H2C and Flashforge Creator 5 Pro to 65 °C, the Prusa CORE One L+ INDX to 60 °C and the CORE One+ INDX to 55 °C. The WonderMaker ZR Ultra-S lists a 60 °C enclosed chamber. The Snapmaker U1 and Flashforge Creator 5 have no chamber heater.

Two more get there with paid add-ons:

  • Prusa XL+. The optional enclosure holds up to 50 °C. Prusa lists an external heater as an upcoming add-on that brings it to 60 °C.
  • Makertech ProForge 5. The £299 enclosure includes a chamber heater that Makertech rates “up to 50c in room temp”, plus a fume filter and exhaust fan.

The Snapmaker U1’s optional Top Cover encloses the printer for ABS, ASA, nylon (PA) and polycarbonate (PC). Snapmaker describes it as heat retention, with no heater listed in the U1 specifications. Dual nozzle printing with a heated chamber lists the chamber temperature each engineering filament needs.

TapChanger (viesturz) Voron 2 6 Dragon Burner hotends on a 350 frame GitHub, GPL-3.0; self-sourced bill of materials

StealthChanger and TapChanger both run on Klipper. TapChanger’s author wrote the klipper-toolchanger extension that handles tool pickup, docking and offsets. The Voron toolchanger comparison sets the Voron options side by side, and the StealthChanger build guide walks through assembly.

E3D’s ToolChanger and Motion System is discontinued. The company stopped production in August 2023 to focus on extrusion systems. It said it would sell spare parts until stock ran out, continue selling blank tool plates and leave the design files public.

New and upcoming toolchanger printers in 2026

Four toolchangers were announced but not shipping on October 14, 2026:

  • Creality K3. Pre-orders opened on October 13, 2026, at $849 in the US. Its KliTek system swaps four nozzle assemblies in about 5 seconds, per Creality, with a 260 × 260 × 260 mm build volume. Creality expects European availability in December 2026.
  • Sovol M1D. On pre-order at $1,499 (regular $1,799) with an estimated ship window of late December to early January. It combines IDEX (independent dual extrusion, two carriages that move separately) with a toolchanger: one fixed toolhead plus six swappable ones. The build volume is 300 × 300 × 350 mm with one toolhead and 240 × 300 × 350 mm with all seven. The enclosed M1D Advanced heats its chamber to 60 °C.
  • AtomForm Palette 300. Shown at CES in January 2026 with 12 swapping nozzles and a 300 mm cube of build volume. AtomForm gave a retail price of just over $2,000 and Q2 2026 shipping, and that window has passed. On October 14, 2026, AtomForm’s own store listed only a nozzle kit, with no printer for sale and no ship date.
  • WonderMaker ZR Ultra. The open-frame version of the ZR Ultra-S is listed as “upcoming” on WonderMaker’s site.

Two add-ons are also due: Bondtech’s INDX Development Kit ships from late October 2026, and Prusa lists the XL+ external chamber heater as upcoming.
