Creality K1 hotend upgrades: Unicorn and alternatives

The Creality K1, K1C and K1 Max take Creality's Unicorn quick-swap nozzle kit ($40.94) and ceramic heating block kits, Unicorn-format nozzles from E3D and Phaetus, and one complete third-party hotend, the Micro Swiss FlowTech ($64.99). None raises the printers' 300 °C limit, and what fits depends on whether your printer has the older separate nozzle or the integrated Unicorn one.

Most hotend upgrades for the Creality K1, K1C and K1 Max are nozzle swaps: Creality’s Unicorn kit and Unicorn-format nozzles from E3D and Phaetus. Creality’s ceramic heating block kits and the Micro Swiss FlowTech replace the hot end itself. None is rated past the printers’ 300 °C limit, and what fits depends on your printer’s hotend generation.

What hotend upgrades fit the Creality K1?

Hotend upgrades that fit the Creality K1 series are Creality’s ceramic heating block kits and Unicorn quick-swap nozzle kit, Unicorn-format nozzles from E3D and Phaetus, and the Micro Swiss FlowTech replacement hotend. Every maker that publishes a temperature rates them at 300 °C. That is also Creality’s ceiling for the K1, K1C, K1 Max and K1 SE.

Fit depends on which of two nozzle designs your printer has. Early K1 and K1 Max units use a separate nozzle with a 6 mm metric (M6) thread, screwed into a heater block. The K1C, the K1 SE and later K1 and K1 Max units use the integrated Unicorn nozzle, with the heat break built in. Creality’s store calls those later units the K1 (2024) and K1 Max (2024).

Printer Heater Nozzle as shipped Max nozzle temperature
Creality K1 Ceramic, around the hotend; rated 32 mm³/s Early: copper alloy M6 nozzle on a titanium alloy heat break. Later: Unicorn 300 °C
Creality K1 Max Same as the K1 Early: M6 nozzle (hardened steel on Creality’s K1 Max page, copper in its comparison table). Later and K1 Max 2025: Unicorn 300 °C
Creality K1C and K1C 2025 Ceramic heating head Unicorn 300 °C
Creality K1 SE Integrated hotend kit Steel-tipped nozzle integrated with the heat break 300 °C

Temperatures are from each printer’s user manual on the Creality Wiki. Creality’s comparison table lists the original K1 and K1 Max hotends as “Metal + Teflon Tube (Changing to All-metal Soon)” and the K1C’s as “All-metal”.

How to tell which K1 hotend you have

  • Set screw. Micro Swiss’s FlowTech instructions say older K1 and K1 Max heatsinks have a set screw in the back, and newer ones do not.
  • Nozzle length. Creality’s parts lists give the old M6 nozzle as 23 mm tall and the integrated nozzle as 65.4 mm long.
  • 2025 connectors. From 2025 the printhead board uses XHB and HY2.0 connectors for the heater and thermistor, per Micro Swiss. Creality marks its ceramic kits “non-buckle” for older boards or “with buckle” for 2024 and 2025 models.

Are K1 nozzle swaps tool-free?

No. Creality markets the K1C’s Unicorn nozzle as a “one-handed swap”, but its wiki procedure removes the nozzle cover and silicone sock and heats the nozzle to 220 °C. A wrench then holds the nozzle while a socket loosens it. The older M6 nozzle also comes out hot, at 260 °C, with a socket and an open-end wrench.

What is the Creality Unicorn hotend?

The Creality Unicorn hotend is Creality’s name for its tri-metal quick-swap nozzle: a copper alloy nozzle with a hardened steel tip, integrated with a titanium alloy heat break and threaded into a ceramic heater. It ships on the K1C, K1 SE and later K1 and K1 Max units. Creality rates the replacement kit at up to 30 mm³/s.

Creality’s K1C page splits the nozzle into three metals. Copper alloy sheds heat and melts the filament, titanium alloy blocks heat creep, and the hardened steel tip lasts six times as long as a copper nozzle in Creality’s own tests.

The spare part is the “Unicorn” Quick-Swap Nozzle Kit, $40.94 at Creality’s US store on October 30, 2026. Creality lists it for the K1 and K1 Max “with integrated nozzle”, the K1C, the K1 SE and the Ender-3 V3 and V3 Plus. It comes in 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 mm. Its filament list includes carbon-fiber-filled grades (PLA-CF, PA-CF and PET-CF), but the kit page states no temperature.

On a printer that already has the integrated nozzle, the kit adds sizes rather than new hardware: the heater, heat sink and 300 °C limit stay the same.

Can I fit a Unicorn nozzle to an older K1 or K1 Max?

Not by itself, because Creality lists the kit only for units “with integrated nozzle”. Creality’s store also sells a K1 Series Ceramic Heating Block Kit + Quick-swap Nozzle Kit ($32.99) for the K1, K1 Max and K1C. Its page does not say whether it fits the older heatsink, so confirm with Creality before ordering. Options listed for the separate M6 nozzle:

  • Creality nozzles. The High Flow Nozzle Kit for K1/K1 Max ($23.92) and the Hardened Steel Brass Nozzle for K1/K1 Max ($5.99).
  • Bondtech CHT Vol nozzles. Bondtech recommends them for the Creality K1 and says they are not compatible with the Unicorn hotend on the K1C and K1 Max.
  • Micro Swiss FlowTech. It ships with adapters and screws for both old and new heatsinks.

Which hotend upgrade kits fit the K1, K1C and K1 Max?

The table is sorted alphabetically by maker. Makers test flow in different ways, so their figures are not directly comparable. Prices are US store prices on October 30, 2026.

Product Fits (maker’s list) Maker’s max temperature Nozzle Maker’s flow figure Firmware or slicer change US price

Phaetus EndCoat Nozzle K1C, K1 Max Not stated Hardened steel, EndCoat coating Not published None stated $12.90
Phaetus Silicon Carbide Nozzle K1C, K1 Max 300 °C Silicon carbide Not published None stated $21.90

Creality also sells an older K1C Ceramic Heating Block Kit + Quick-swap Nozzle Kit ($22.87), which it says does not fit the 2025 K1C. E3D’s own figures for the 0.4 mm ObXidian run from 22 mm³/s in PLA at 220 °C to 45 mm³/s in PLA+ at 220 °C. E3D’s store prices its nozzles in pounds, so the US prices come from Creality’s store and West3D.

The FlowTech is the only complete hotend here. Micro Swiss lists a 24 V, 60 W ceramic heater core and a 28.6 mm melt zone, with the nozzle and heat break sealed into one part.

Its nozzles run from $16.50 (brass plated, 300 °C) to $124.99 (DiamondBack, 350 °C). The CM2 hardened tips are rated 450 °C, and the CHT nozzles use Bondtech’s CHT design. Micro Swiss rates the hotend itself at 300 °C.

Which K1 Max hotend upgrade fits what you print?

The choice turns on what you print, how fast you print it and how often you change nozzles. The same conditions apply to the K1 and K1C.

  • Abrasive filaments (carbon or glass fiber). The Unicorn nozzle already has a hardened steel tip. Harder-wearing options are E3D’s ObXidian and DiamondBack, Phaetus’s silicon carbide nozzle and the FlowTech’s CM2 or DiamondBack nozzles. Phaetus claims “up to 7x longer service life” for silicon carbide than for ordinary hardened steel. E3D’s brass nozzle is not abrasion resistant, and an early K1’s copper nozzle needs replacing first. See when to use a hardened steel nozzle.
  • Higher flow. Creality rates the stock K1 and K1 Max hotend at 32 mm³/s. E3D (52 and 45 mm³/s) and Micro Swiss (50 mm³/s) claim more, without stating test conditions on their product pages. The gain only shows once you raise the slicer’s max volumetric speed.
  • Easier nozzle changes. The FlowTech’s nozzle goes in cold, tightened with a 7 mm wrench to 1.7 N·m (15 inch-pounds). Unicorn-format nozzles are changed hot: 220 °C in Creality’s procedure, 240 °C in E3D’s. E3D says to rerun the printer’s self-check afterward.
  • An early K1 or K1 Max. Unicorn-format nozzles do not fit. The FlowTech and the M6 nozzles above do.
  • A K1C 2025 or K1 Max 2025. Use a kit marked “with buckle” or for 2025 models, or the FlowTech with its adapter cables.

Can a K1 hotend upgrade go above 300 °C?

No: Creality rates every K1-series printer to 300 °C. Its published Klipper configuration for the K1, K1C, K1 Max and K1 SE sets the extruder’s max_temp to 320 with an EPCOS 100K B57560G104F thermistor. Klipper shuts the controller down if the measured temperature leaves the min_temp to max_temp range. Micro Swiss rates the FlowTech at 300 °C “with a properly tuned NTC thermistor”.

Going hotter would need a sensor and heater rated for it and an edited configuration, which needs root access. Creality added root to the K1 and K1 Max firmware, and its wiki says the K1C 2025 and K1 Max 2025 do not support it.

Creality’s release notes say rooted hardware keeps after-sales service but gets no support for root-related software. Its wiki disclaimer warns that a rooted device “may lose the official warranty service”, and its after-sales policy excludes “quality problems resulting from unauthorized modifications”. Running above a maker’s stated limit is at your own risk; see does upgrading void the warranty and the firmware temperature limits guide.

A hotend that changes the heater or thermistor must match the firmware’s sensor type and heater checks, or thermal runaway protection cannot work; Klipper heater verification covers those checks. For filaments that print above 300 °C, hotends for engineering filaments lists hotends rated higher.
