Bambu Lab LAN mode vs cloud mode: what changes

Cloud mode runs a Bambu Lab printer through Bambu Lab's servers, which Bambu Handy, remote printing and print history need. LAN Only mode cuts that link: Bambu Studio talks to the printer directly on your network and print files never reach the cloud. Developer Mode, a switch inside LAN Only mode, also lets third-party software control the printer.

Cloud mode gives a Bambu Lab printer remote printing, the Bambu Handy app, print history and MakerWorld one-step printing, all through Bambu Lab’s servers. LAN Only mode gives up those four and keeps everything on your network: Bambu Studio prints, monitors and shows the camera using the printer’s access code, with no internet connection or account. Developer Mode, a switch inside LAN Only mode, also lets third-party software such as Home Assistant control the printer.

Facts below come from Bambu Lab’s wiki, blog and release notes as of November 7, 2026. Setup steps are in how to run a Bambu Lab printer in LAN-only mode.

What is the difference between Bambu Lab LAN mode and cloud mode?

Cloud mode connects a Bambu Lab printer to Bambu Lab’s servers, the route that Bambu Handy, remote printing, print history and MakerWorld one-step printing all need. LAN Only mode cuts that connection: Bambu Studio talks to the printer directly on your local network, no internet or account is needed, and print files never reach the cloud.

Developer Mode is an option you can only turn on inside LAN Only mode. It switches off the authorization checks Bambu Lab added to its firmware in 2025, so third-party software can control the printer again.

Sorted by feature, on firmware with authorization control (see the next section):

A few cells need more detail:

  • Bambu Studio in cloud mode. Bambu Lab’s X1 guide says Bambu Studio sends a file straight to the printer only “when Studio can find the printer in the local network and an SD card is in the printer”. Otherwise it goes through the cloud. Either way a copy is uploaded for print history. It is deleted after 90 days, or within 72 hours if you delete the history entry or turn on incognito printing in Bambu Handy.
  • LAN Only mode and print files. Bambu Lab’s remote control guide says “No print information and files will be transferred to cloud server in this mode.” Its Trust Center post says LAN-Only Mode keeps the printer “off the internet entirely (no cloud connection, period)”.
  • Presets. Bambu Lab’s preset guide says user presets upload to Bambu Cloud under the account logged in to Bambu Studio. Logging in is “optional, but strongly recommended” and does not depend on the printer’s mode.
  • Developer Mode on H2 series printers. Bambu Lab’s LAN mode guide says it “only works for 3d printing parts”, and the H2D release notes say it “can be enabled in case of 3D printing”.

Third-party software after the January 2025 authorization changes

Authorization control shipped in X1 firmware 01.08.05.00 on March 12, 2025 and in the H2D’s first firmware, 01.01.00.00, on March 25, 2025. P1 firmware 01.08.02.00 and A1 and A1 mini firmware 01.05.00.00 followed on June 3, 2025. Each of those releases also added Developer Mode. Older firmware on those printers has neither.

With authorization control, starting a print from software other than Bambu Studio “will require Bambu Connect”. Commands for movement, temperature, fans, AMS settings and calibration need authorized access “in both cloud mode and normal LAN mode”. Status updates over MQTT, printing from a memory card and memory-card firmware updates are not affected. The same rules cover any software that talks to the printer directly.

  • Bambu Connect. Bambu Lab’s desktop app sends sliced files from OrcaSlicer and other slicers to the printer, in cloud mode or LAN Only mode. Bambu Lab says LAN mode through Bambu Connect needs “neither internet access nor a user account”. As of its August 13, 2026 wiki update, it is a beta (version 2.5.0-beta.15) for Windows and macOS. Bambu Lab lists Linux as “under development” and live view as not yet supported.
  • Developer Mode. It turns the checks off. Bambu Lab says third-party software “will continue to work without any modifications”, but the printer can no longer connect to Bambu Cloud. OrcaSlicer’s 2.3.2 beta notes (February 14, 2026) say full H2D and H2S support requires LAN mode and Developer Mode enabled on the printer.
  • Home Assistant. The community ha-bambulab integration keeps reading sensors in every mode. Its docs say most control actions stop on authorization firmware unless you “put your printer into LAN Mode, and enable Developer Lan Mode”.

Developer Mode setup is in Bambu Lab Developer Mode. The reasons Bambu Lab gave for the checks are in the Bambu Lab firmware controversy.

Which mode fits which setup

  • Cloud mode fits if you start or watch prints away from home, print from your phone through Bambu Handy or MakerWorld, or want print history and push notifications.
  • LAN Only mode fits if the printer must stay off the internet or print files must stay local, and you print from a computer on the same network with Bambu Studio, or with OrcaSlicer through Bambu Connect. Bambu Lab points to “highly sensitive models that need to be kept private”.
  • LAN Only with Developer Mode fits if Home Assistant, a third-party slicer or another tool must control the printer directly. It also means accepting that Bambu Lab offers no support for the mode and that you must secure your own network.

What do you lose in Bambu Lab LAN mode?

Bambu Lab lists three losses: you cannot start prints from outside your local network, the Bambu Handy app stops working, and print history is gone. You also lose MakerWorld one-step printing, phone notifications and remote camera viewing, which depend on Bambu Handy or the cloud. Firmware updates move to a memory card or USB drive.

What each loss means, and what to use instead:

  • Remote printing. Bambu Lab’s LAN mode guide says you “cannot start prints remotely from outside the local network”. Print from a computer on the same network.
  • Bambu Handy. Bambu Lab’s Handy guide says the app “does not currently support printer LAN mode”; it uses the LAN only to find printers and moves data over the internet. Bambu Studio on a computer covers printing and printer control. More in Bambu Handy and LAN mode.
  • Print history. History lives on the cloud copies of your print files, which LAN Only mode never makes. Keep your sliced 3MF files if you want to reprint.
  • MakerWorld one-step printing. It runs inside Bambu Handy and uses Bambu Lab’s cloud-slicing service. Download the model’s 3MF print profile from MakerWorld, open it in Bambu Studio and send it over the network.
  • Phone notifications. They come from Bambu Handy, so LAN Only mode has none from Bambu Lab. The community ha-bambulab integration for Home Assistant still reads status in LAN mode without Developer Mode. Its device triggers fire when a print starts, finishes or is canceled, and on HMS (Health Management System) errors. You can turn them into your own alerts. See Bambu Lab and Home Assistant.
  • Firmware prompts. Bambu Lab’s update guides describe the prompt only for a printer “connected to Wi-Fi and bind to a user account”. Offline, download the package on another computer and install it from a microSD card or USB drive. The steps are in Bambu Lab offline firmware update.
  • Cloud-updated failure detection. Spaghetti detection on the X1 series runs on the printer in both modes. In LAN mode it relies “only on the information it has in the latest firmware”, so Bambu Lab recommends updating firmware regularly.
  • Third-party control. On authorization firmware, only Developer Mode restores direct control by third-party software.

What still works in LAN Only mode

Bambu Studio keeps printing, monitoring and controlling the printer, and shows the camera. Memory-card printing, Bambu Connect and preset sync in a logged-in Bambu Studio also keep working. On the X1 series, Bambu Lab says a microSD card must be inserted to start a print from Bambu Studio in LAN mode. Bambu Studio’s P1S profile also marks the printer as unable to print without a card, as the LAN-only guide explains.

How does Bambu Lab LAN mode work?

In LAN Only mode, Bambu Studio talks to the printer directly over your local network. It finds the printer from its discovery broadcasts and logs in with the access code shown on the printer’s screen. Commands and status travel over MQTT, print files over FTP, and the camera has its own stream. Nothing passes through Bambu Lab’s servers.

Bambu Lab’s P1 release notes put it this way: “all data exchanged between printer and studio will be carried in the same LAN, without connecting to the cloud.” The pieces, from Bambu Lab’s port list and documentation:

  • Discovery. The printer announces itself with SSDP (Simple Service Discovery Protocol) multicast and broadcast packets. Bambu Studio lists it with a lock icon, which Bambu Lab says can take 20 to 60 seconds. For a printer on a different subnet or VLAN, Bambu Lab’s guide says to bind it by IP address and access code instead.
  • Access code. Bambu Studio uses it to authenticate to the printer. Bambu Lab says that if you refresh it on the printer screen, “Bambu Studio will disconnect and needs the new access code to connect to the printer again.”
  • Control and status. Bambu Studio sends commands and reads status over MQTT, a lightweight messaging protocol, on TCP 8883.
  • Print files. Files go over FTP (file transfer protocol) on TCP 990.
  • Camera. The video streams on TCP 322 or 6000, depending on the model.

The community OpenBambuAPI documentation adds that all three connections are encrypted with TLS (Transport Layer Security) and use the user name bblp with the access code as the password. The full port list, with what to open on a firewall, is in Bambu Lab LAN mode not working.

Cloud mode adds a second path. The printer also connects to Bambu Lab’s servers: an MQTT broker for remote control and an HTTP API that Bambu Lab lists for “user login, remote print, remote video, firmware OTA” (over-the-air updates). Bambu Studio’s Auto mode uses the internet and the LAN “accordingly”, and uploads the print file “to the cloud server to make the printer download from the remote.” In LAN mode, Bambu Lab’s port guide says its list of cloud domains “can be ignored”.

Two things LAN mode does not change:

  • Bambu Studio still needs the Bambu Network plug-in to send files and open the Device page, and Bambu Lab says installing it “requires Internet connection”. Install it before taking the computer offline.
  • Authorization still applies. Bambu Lab’s reason for checking commands in LAN mode is that “the network environment in which the printer is located may still be connected to the public network, and other malicious software may still be able to remotely access the printer.” Developer Mode removes that check and, in Bambu Lab’s words, opens “the MQTT channel, live stream, and FTP, giving you full control over your printer and its network security.”
