Upgrading Bambu Lab printers for engineering materials

Bambu Lab High Flow hotend vs standard, and the third-party options

Bambu Lab's High Flow hotend fits the H2D, H2S, H2C, P2S and X2D, and Bambu Lab rates it at 65 mm³/s against 40 mm³/s for the Standard Flow hotend, both in ABS at 280 °C. It costs $49.99 against $17.99. Bambu Lab lists the X1 and P1 series as not supported, so owners of those printers need a third-party high-flow hotend.

Bambu Lab’s High Flow hotend is an optional hardened steel hotend for the H2D, H2S, H2C, P2S and X2D, rated at 65 mm³/s against 40 mm³/s for the Standard Flow hotend in Bambu Lab ABS at 280 °C, per the H2D and H2S spec sheets. It comes in 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 mm and cost $49.99 at the Bambu Lab US store on October 21, 2026, against $17.99 for a Standard Flow hotend. Bambu Lab makes none for the X1 or P1 series, which take third-party high-flow hotends such as the E3D model Bambu Lab sells.

What is the Bambu Lab High Flow hotend?

The Bambu Lab High Flow hotend is an optional quick-swap hotend for the Bambu Lab H2D, H2S, H2C, P2S and X2D. Its nozzle has a different internal structure that increases the contact area between filament and hotend, and Bambu Lab says it raises maximum volumetric speed by up to 62.5% over the Standard Flow hotend.

Bambu Lab’s nozzle guide also credits “powerful nozzle heating capacity” and an optimized melting zone. The outside does not change: Bambu Lab lists both hotends at the same 49.2 mm length and 350 °C rating, on the same latch mount.

The 62.5% figure comes from one Bambu Lab test: ABS in a 240 mm diameter single-wall cylinder in vase mode, 0.2 mm layers, a 1.0 mm outer wall and a 280 °C nozzle. Bambu Lab also claims up to 30% shorter print times on a 300 × 300 × 300 mm PLA Basic cube at 15% infill, and says “the larger your model, the more time you save”.

Which printers take it, per Bambu Lab’s store and nozzle guide:

  • H2D, H2S, P2S and X2D: the High Flow hotend for H2/P2S/X2D, $49.99 in 0.4, 0.6 or 0.8 mm hardened steel. It fits both sides of the H2D. A tungsten carbide High Flow version costs $89.99, against $59.99 for standard-flow tungsten carbide.
  • H2C: the same hotend fits the fixed left side. The right side takes Vortek induction hotends and needs the High Flow version of the H2C Induction Hotend, $69.99 against $39.99 for the standard-flow one.
  • X1 and P1 series: listed as “Not Supported”. The X1C and P1S section below covers the alternatives.
  • A1 and A2 series: it fits, but on these printers Bambu Lab says it “will not improve volumetric speed” and “performs the same as a Standard Flow Hotend”.

The hotend’s 350 °C rating does not raise the printer’s limit. The H2D, H2S and H2C reach 350 °C, and the P2S and X2D stop at 300 °C, per their spec sheets. The Bambu Lab hub lists every model’s limits.

How does the Bambu Lab High Flow hotend compare with the standard hotend?

Bambu Lab rates its Standard Flow hotend at 40 mm³/s and its High Flow hotend at 65 mm³/s, both in ABS at 280 °C. The High Flow costs $49.99 against $17.99 and comes only in 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 mm hardened steel. Bambu Lab does not recommend its 0.4 mm size for carbon- or glass-fiber filaments.

Standard Flow hotend (H2/P2S/X2D) High Flow hotend (H2/P2S/X2D)
Max flow on the H2D and H2S spec sheets (Bambu Lab ABS, 280 °C, 250 mm single-wall round model) 40 mm³/s 65 mm³/s
Max volumetric speed on Bambu Lab’s product page, 0.4 mm (PLA Basic, PLA Matte, PETG HF) 24, 28 and 24 mm³/s 40, 48 and 32 mm³/s
Same, 0.6 and 0.8 mm Not listed 40 mm³/s for all three
Sizes 0.2 mm stainless steel; 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 mm hardened steel 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 mm hardened steel
PLA-CF, PETG-CF, ASA-CF, PAHT-CF, PA6-CF and PA6-GF at 0.4 mm Supported “Not recommended”; supported at 0.6 and 0.8 mm
TPU 90A Supported at 0.4 to 0.8 mm “Not recommended” at every size
Rated max printing temperature 350 °C 350 °C
Length 49.2 mm 49.2 mm
US price, October 21, 2026 $17.99 $49.99

Filament ratings are from the compatibility tables on Bambu Lab’s two product pages. The P2S and X2D spec sheets give only the Standard Flow figure of 40 mm³/s. For fiber-filled filaments in general, Bambu Lab’s standard hotend page says a hardened steel 0.6 mm nozzle is “highly recommended”. The wear-resistant nozzle comparison covers nozzle materials.

What changes in Bambu Studio

Max volumetric speed is the cap, in mm³/s, that the slicer puts on how much plastic it asks the hotend to melt each second. Bambu Studio stores a separate cap for each hotend type, so setting the nozzle type to High Flow raises the speeds the slicer plans. Bambu Studio’s system profiles on GitHub held these values for 0.4 mm nozzles on October 21, 2026:

Bambu Studio profile Standard Flow High Flow
Bambu PLA Basic, P2S 21 mm³/s 40 mm³/s
Bambu PLA Basic, H2D 25 mm³/s 40 mm³/s
Bambu ABS, P2S 16 mm³/s 25 mm³/s
Bambu ABS, H2D 20 mm³/s 35 mm³/s

Bambu Lab’s documents do not agree on PLA Basic through a 0.4 mm High Flow nozzle. The product page and Bambu Studio give 40 mm³/s, but Bambu Lab’s volumetric speed article puts the H2 series at “around 35 mm³/s”. Bambu Studio’s High Flow ABS caps (25 and 35 mm³/s) also sit well below the H2D and H2S spec sheets’ 65 mm³/s, a figure measured on a single-wall model.

Does the Bambu Lab P2S come with a high flow nozzle?

No. The Bambu Lab P2S ships with a 0.4 mm hardened steel Standard Flow hotend, which its spec sheet rates at 40 mm³/s in ABS at 280 °C. Bambu Lab’s P2S packing list includes no spare or High Flow hotend. A High Flow hotend for the P2S is a separate purchase, $49.99 in 0.4, 0.6 or 0.8 mm.

The P2S spec sheet lists a hardened steel nozzle, 0.4 mm included, 0.2 to 0.8 mm supported and a 300 °C maximum. The H2D ships the same way: Bambu Lab’s wiki says it “comes with a built-in 0.4mm nozzle”, and the H2D and H2S spec sheets list the High Flow hotend as optional.

Fitting one to a P2S needs no wiring: Bambu Lab’s P2S page describes “a simple one-clip mechanism that releases the entire nozzle and heatsink assembly”. Let the fitted hotend cool before you release the clip. Then tell the printer what is fitted: Bambu Lab’s P2S guide says to set it under Filament > Nozzle & Extruder > Nozzle Type on the printer’s screen before the next print. Bambu Lab’s FAQ adds that the P2S takes H2D hotends but not A1 hotends.

Is there a high flow nozzle for the Bambu X1C or P1S?

Yes, but not from Bambu Lab’s own range, which lists its High Flow hotend as “Not Supported” on the X1 and P1 series. The Bambu Lab US store sells the E3D High Flow ObXidian hotend for the X1C and P1 series instead: 0.4 or 0.6 mm, $77 as a hotend or $115 as a complete hotend on October 21, 2026.

Bambu Lab’s store listing says to select the nozzle flow type “High Flow” in Bambu Studio or Bambu Handy once it is fitted. Bambu Lab’s wiki lists tuned settings for common Bambu filaments on the 0.4 and 0.6 mm E3D hotends.

Micro Swiss, Phaetus and Slice Engineering also sell high-flow hotends for the X1 and P1 series; the table at the end of this page gives the flow each maker states. The P1S ships with a stainless steel nozzle, so for abrasive filaments check the nozzle column. Most of these hotends use a coated or hardened nozzle, but Micro Swiss also sells a plated brass version.

What is the E3D High Flow ObXidian hotend?

The E3D High Flow ObXidian is a drop-in hotend for Bambu Lab printers with a wear-resistant ObXidian coating and an internal nozzle modification that E3D says raises volumetric flow by 60%. E3D developed it with Bambu Lab, calls itself “the only officially approved manufacturer of aftermarket Bambu Lab HotEnds”, and pays Bambu Lab a royalty on each sale.

E3D sells three versions for Bambu Lab printers:

  • High Flow ObXidian, X1 and P1. Fits the X1, X1C, P1P and P1S in 0.4 or 0.6 mm; E3D says it is “not compatible with the X1E printer”. E3D sells a version that reuses your heater and temperature sensor at £60, and a complete hotend at £90. Maximum 300 °C.
  • High Flow ObXiDian 500, X1 and P1. Adds an X1E version. E3D says its coating is “at least 5 times more wear resistant” than ObXidian, and credits a “4 channel internal nozzle modification” with “over 60%” more flow. £120 at E3D. West3D, a US retailer, lists the X1C version at $133.99 and the P1P and P1S version at $149.99.
  • High Flow ObXiDian 500, H2, P2, X2 and A2. Fits the H2D, H2C, H2S, P2S, X2D and A2L in 0.4 or 0.6 mm, and clips in like the stock hotend. £90 at E3D, and $120 for the 0.4 mm at West3D, which showed the 0.6 mm out of stock.

E3D publishes no maximum in mm³/s; its X1 and P1 product page gives layer strength by flow rate instead. At 240 °C and 20 mm³/s, parts from the stock Bambu Lab hardened steel hotend tested at 9 MPa and parts from the High Flow ObXidian at 39 MPa. Only the E3D hotend printed at 25 and 30 mm³/s. At 220 °C and 5 to 15 mm³/s, the stock hotend’s parts tested stronger, at 37 to 40 MPa against 33 to 38 MPa.

E3D says the printer’s temperature limit still applies, and gives it as 350 °C for the H2D, H2C, H2S and X2D and 300 °C for the P2S and A2L. For the X2D that disagrees with Bambu Lab’s own spec sheet, which lists 300 °C.

The three Bambu Lab rows come from different tests. The 65 mm³/s is the spec sheets’ ABS figure. The 48 and 40 mm³/s are product-page figures for PLA Matte and PLA Basic, and the hardened steel High Flow hotend’s own product page lists the same 48 and 40 at 0.4 mm.

Prices are each maker’s own store in US dollars, except where the table names another seller. E3D’s store lists prices in pounds, so its US prices come from Bambu Lab’s US store and West3D. Micro Swiss’s Hyper-CHT page showed $0.00 for every variant. The CHT nozzles in the three Micro Swiss rows use Bondtech’s design: Micro Swiss calls it “genuine, patented Bondtech CHT technology”.

The max temperature column gives each maker’s rating for the hotend, and the printer’s firmware still sets the ceiling. Slice Engineering notes that Bambu Lab firmware limits the X1 and P1 series to 300 to 320 °C, whatever hotend is fitted. For printing hotter than that, see hotends for engineering filaments. For what a third-party hotend does to your warranty, see does upgrading void the warranty.
